not your average commute...

but nyc is not your average city... from midtown manhattan a swiss tram cruises across the east river to roosevelt island at a scenic 16mph pace offering a unique view of the city. it runs every 15 minutes (takes less than five to get across) and seems to me like a pretty nice commute. the island itself has a rich history. it used to be called welfare island with 8 hospitals and asylums built in the nineteen hundreds... actress mae west did ten days in the local jail for her notorious 1927 play "sex"... now it's a planned community with "northtown I and II" and "southtown"... i didn't have time to explore the island much... but i'm going back. how come ya never hear about this place?
